Governement has let down UK Sport

Hugh Robertson concerned over the shortfall in private sector funding for the 2012 Olympics.

Responding to the National Audit Office report into sporting success at the 2012 Olympics, which raises concerns about the shortfall in private sector funding, Hugh Robertson, Shadow Olympics Minister, said:

“Two years after Gordon Brown trumpeted an extra £300m for elite sport in his March 2006 Budget, it is deeply shaming that UK Sport still have absolutely no guarantee that one third of that money will be forthcoming.

“All the Government has done is to appoint an agency to investigate the possibilities and they are operating in the worst economic environment for years and at a time when a myriad of other sporting bodies, not least London 2012 themselves, are competing for sponsorship.

“It is hard to avoid the conclusion that the Government, and in particular the Prime Minister, has let down both UK Sport and the individual athletes badly.”
