KINGSFIELD TRAFFIC ACTION GROUP PETITION PRESENTED IN PARLIAMENT
For the first time ever, a Faversham petition has been presented in Parliament. Hugh gained a slot on Wednesday 16 June to present a petition signed by over 170 residents of Briton, Saxon, Roman and Norman Roads, and Stone Street, Faversham in support of a 20mph speed limit on these roads.
The presentation of this petition is the culmination of a campaign started by Faversham mother Amanda Thesiger. She formed a group called the Kingsfield Traffic Action Group to campaign for the 20mph speed limit. Many homes in the area display the ’20 is Plenty’ sign as a gesture of support.
During 2003, Amanda collected over 170 signatures from local residents concerned about the speeding traffic and enlisted the support of her local MP. Hugh agreed to support the campaign, after meeting local residents, and to present the petition to Parliament. He gained the necessary Parliamentary time last Wednesday.
The petition will now go to the Secretary of State for Transport for further consideration.
Hugh said: “I was delighted to present the petition on behalf of the Kingsfield Traffic Action Group and to put on the record my support for their campaign for a 20mph speed limit.
“As far as we can ascertain this is the first time that such a petition from Faversham has been presented in Parliament. As its object is to protect the lives of young children, I can think of no more worthy cause.”
