MP VOWS TO CONTINUE FIGHT AGAINST POST OFFICE CLOSURES
Hugh Robertson has said that he is extremely disappointed by the Post Office’s decision to close the Post Office branches at Downswood and Roseacre. A decision on the post office at Bearsted Green has yet to be taken.
The decision was conveyed to the MP in a letter from Paul Simmonds, the Head of the Area. A copy is available by fax on request by replying to this email.
Hugh said: “I am extremely disappointed by the Post Office’s decision. An extremely good case had been put forward for their retention and, inevitably, the suspicion will now be that the decision had already been made and the consultation was a sham.
“Once the government told the Post Office that it would no longer subsidise unprofitable branches, the writing was probably on the wall. This is totally wrong because, as was apparent during the consultation, Post Offices serve a vital social need.
“I am extremely grateful for the support I received in fighting these closures from Maidstone Borough Council, the Parish Council, CPRE and a huge number of local people. Like me, they will be feeling very let down.
“I will be examining every possible option to continue the fight.”
