Hugh Robertson was one of the five originating signatures on a Commons Motion designed to bring down the provisions of the new Licensing Act. Hugh spoke against the Bill during the Queen’s Speech when it was introduced, has voted against it at every stage, questioned the Prime Minister over its impact on sports clubs and has been a vocal critic of the Bill at every stage of its passage through Parliament.

Hugh Robertson said: “I have always opposed this Bill which was introduced for political advantage during the 2001 General Election.

“Right from the outset, brewers, such as Shepherd Neame in my own constituency, and magistrates were against the Bill. They have now been joined by Chief Constables, individual publicans and countless residents groups.

“The Bill will only serve to encourage alcohol related disorder and will charge licensees, including sports and community clubs, vastly increased fees to foot the bill.

“This is an example of a really bad piece of legislation.”
