The Chairman of the influential Public Accounts Committee, which monitors the National Audit Office, has withdrawn his support for the Kent International Gateway proposal. Edward Leigh MP has taken the unusual step of writing to The House of Commons authorities specifically to ask to have his name removed from an Early Day Motion tabled by Labour and Liberal Democrat members in support of the Kent International Gateway proposal.
Edward Leigh had been lobbied both by Hugh Robertson, the local MP, and Paul Carter the Leader of Kent County Council.
Hugh Robertson said, “The Early Day Motion is a blatant piece of party political manoeuvring by the promoters of Kent International Gateway – and the motion is now almost exclusively supported by Labour and Liberal Democrat Members of Parliament.
It is extremely encouraging for all opponents of this horrific scheme that The Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee has so publicly withdrawn his support.”
