Olympics should not be used for party political purposes

Speaking today during a visit to the IOC in Geneva.

Speaking today during a visit to the IOC in Geneva, Shadow Olympic Minister, Hugh Robertson said:

“I am visiting the IOC for the first time today to reinforce The Conservative Party's support for London 2012 and to find out more about what the IOC expects from a potential host government.

“We have an agreement with Government that London 2012 will not be used for party political purposes and I expect this agreement to be honoured during this month's Mayoral elections.

He added:

“In my view, there are two key issues for London 2012 at present - the remaining contracts on the Olympic Park and the mass participation sports legacy. The latter is my greatest concern as two and three quarter years after we made this pledge to the IOC in Singapore, we still have no proper plan and the obvious source of finance, the National Lottery, has been hit to pay for the Games themselves.”
