The International Olympic Committee's visit to the 2012 site in East London

Hugh Robertson MP has commented on the IOC's visit to the 2012 site in East London.

Robertson: IOC should question Government over legacy commitments

“The key issues surrounding the London 2012 Olympics are budget and legacy. The promise we made to the IOC and the world in Singapore was to use London 2012 to enable young people through sport. During the IOC visit I hope they will raise this and question the Government closely on exactly how it proposes to fund and organise the legacy proposals we promised to deliver in Singapore.

“Whilst good progress has been made in many areas by The Coordination Commission and the Delivery Authority, it remains unclear how we will deliver on our legacy commitments for grassroots sport at a time when The National Lottery has been hit further to pay for the Government's miscalculations over the Olympics’ budget.

“If, once the Games are over, we are left with a gleaming set of buildings but no more young people playing sport, London 2012 will have been an opportunity wasted.”
