Hugh Robertson, the MP for Faversham and Mid Kent has written to the Prime Minister regarding a ban of certain Vitamin supplements by the EU.
Hugh Robertson, the MP for Faversham and Mid Kent, has today written to the Prime Minister urging him to support constituents who use vitamins and supplements. The MP has received over fifty letters from constituents concerned that the EU is about to bar their preferred supplement.
The problem arises because the EU Food Supplements Directive seeks to regulate the precise level of mineral or supplement in every tablet that is sold in the UK. The exact levels permitted are due to be announced over the next couple of weeks.
This will mean that any mineral, or supplement, not conforming to the exact dose will be illegal and thus have to be removed from the shelves and destroyed. This will be disastrous for many shops stocking the supplements.
Hugh Robertson said, “I am absolutely amazed, in the current economic climate, that the EU does not have something more relevant to do with its time. Vitamin and mineral supplements are a valuable part of healthcare for many people and should be left well alone by EU bureaucrats.
I want the government to take this up directly with the EU Commission before it is too late.”
