Hugh Robertson tackles Minister over proposed closure of Teynham Post Office

Hugh Robertson has today gained an assurance from Barry Gardiner, the Minister in charge of Post Offices at the DTi that the Chief Executive of the Post Office will look into the proposed closure of Teynham Post Office.

The closure was threatened in a letter from the Post Office to the Parish Council just after Christmas.

Hugh Robertson argued that Teynham was a community that desperately needed a Post Office. It has a high proportion of retired people and serves a large rural hinterland. If the post office was closed, people would have to travel to either Faversham or Sittingbourne.

Hugh said: “I am delighted that the Chief Executive has been told to investigate this personally. This is usually the first move in finding a solution so I am, cautiously, optimistic.

“It also sends a strong message to both government and the GPO that we want to retain our Post Office.”
