Hugh Robertson has just completed a four day visit to encourage democracy activists in Mongolia opposed to the existing communist government.
Hugh made the visit in his capacity as a Governor of The Westminster Foundation for Democracy which seeks to spread democratic values around the world.
During his four days, Hugh travelled for six hours into the interior to visit local activists in small towns and villages. He was also able to visit one of the ancient monasteries previously banned and attacked under the communist regime.
Afterwards, he spent two days in the capital, Ulan Bator, meeting democracy activists and advising them on how to run a political campaign more effectively. The next General Election is in 2008.
Hugh Robertson said: “Mongolia is an increasingly important country sandwiched between Russia and China and we do not want to see it regress. During the visit, I was able to advise the Mongolians on Parliamentary procedure and, with the help of a campaigning expert, on how to improve their campaigning skills.
“They are an incredibly cheerful people, despite that fact that it snowed during our visit, and it was genuinely inspiring to hear of their struggle to establish democratic values that we take for granted.”
