Hugh Robertson has signalled his support for the Kent County Council campaign to force the Government to recognise Kent's special needs and increase the county's grant from the Treasury.
The call came as KCC launched their Fair Funding submission, drawn up by Deloittes, at The House of Commons.
Hugh Robertson said, “This is absolutely vital for every council tax payer in Kent. In recent years, we have seen a diversion of government funding away from Kent towards the Labour heartlands in the Midlands and the North. This has directly led to vast council tax increases since 1997.
I wholly support this analysis, drawn up independently by Deloittes, that indicates
why Kent needs to be treated differently. Kent is not a universally affluent county and there are pockets of terrible deprivation that are not getting the attention they deserve.
The Government needs to stop favouring its own political backyard and allocate the funding available on the basis of greatest need”.
