Hugh Robertson seeks funding for new all weather sports surface for Faversham

Hugh Robertson, the MP for Faversham and Shadow Sports and Olympics Minister, has approached a number of key potential donors in the hope of securing funding for a new all weather 3G football pitch at The Abbey School.

The proposed new pitch, which would be located next to the sports hall, would be a huge boost for sport at the school and would be available for community use in the evenings and at week-ends.

Following on from initial talks with Hugh and the school last year, the Football Foundation have indicated that they might help with 50% of the cost. This leaves £250,000 to be found from other funders.

With the support of the school, Hugh has approached Kent County Council, Swale Borough Council, local NHS organisations and Sainsburys. The supermarket giant has just gained planning permission for a new supermarket on the outskirts of the town and the hope is that they will be willing to help fund a community sports facility.

Hugh said, “This is a fantastically exciting new opportunity for anyone concerned with sport in the town. It will give a huge boost to football at The Abbey School but also sport more generally as other activities can take place on the surface.

It is also great news for Faversham Town Football Club and other community sports groups. A town of Faversham’s size needs a proper, modern all weather facility and I am determined to do everything possible to bring this about.”
