Hugh Robertson has been appointed as one of three Conservative Governors of The Westminster Foundation for Democracy. The appointment was made by the Foreign Secretary, Jack Straw, yesterday.
The Westminster Foundation for Democracy was set up in the mid 1990’s to further the spread of democratic values around the world. It currently supports a variety of democracy building programmes in Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East North African Region.
It has three Governors from each of the Labour and Conservative Parties and one from the Liberal Democrats. They all act as directors of the organisation. All are appointed for a three year term and the post is entirely unremunerated.
Hugh Robertson said: “The Westminster Foundation for Democracy does hugely valuable work helping to spread democratic values around the world particularly in countries that have recently emerged from conflict. Stabilising the political situation is a vital prerequisite before aid and trade issues can start to benefit the local population.
“For me, this is a fabulous opportunity to do something positive so I was delighted to accept the Foreign Secretary’s invitation.”
