HUGH DEMANDS REFERNDUM ON EU CONSTITUTION
Hugh Robertson, Conservative Foreign Affairs Whip, has demanded that the government grant the people of the UK a referendum on the new EU Constitution. He made the demand during the Foreign Secretary's Statement to the House of Commons on the Brussels Summit this weekend.
Hugh said: "The new constitution on Europe will fundamentally change the way we live our lives. A whole raft of powers currently exercised by the national Parliament will shortly be handed over to Brussels.
"As an example, the new constitution will formalise the European Security and Defence Policy. In response to a question I asked, the Foreign Secretary admitted that it would not have made an iota of difference to either Afghanistan or Iraq. It will, however, cost us hugely.
"Such changes should not occur without a referendum."
