Hugh continues fight for rural railways

HUGH ROBERTSON GAINS ASSURANCES FROM SECRETARY OF STATE OVER THE PROPOSED RAIL CUTS TO HOLLINGBOURNE, HARRIETSHAM AND LENHAM

Hugh Robertson has questioned the Secretary of State for Transport, Alistair Darling, about proposed cuts to the rail service to Hollingbourne, Harrietsham and Lenham following the announcement that the Strategic Rail Authority is to be abolished. The three stations, and Charing in Damian Green's Ashford constituency, were faced with a total loss of service during the day and at weekends as part of the Strategic Rail Authority's proposals for the Integrated Kent Franchise.

Hugh reminded Alistair Darling of the huge concern felt in his constituency over the cuts. He asked him exactly what would happen as a result of the abolition of the SRA and whether he would confirm that the consultation would not be extended beyond the autumn.

Alistair Darling confirmed that he was aware of the huge concern in Kent over the SRA's proposals. He also said that the SRA would continue to carry out all its activities, including this review, until it was subsumed into Network Rail in late 2005.

Hugh said: "I was extremely worried that the fate of rural stations on the Maidstone to Ashford line would get lost in the greater political manoeuvrings over the future of the SRA.

"I am delighted that the SRA will retain ownership of the consultation and look forward to them recognising the strength of our case, and restoring the service, when they publish their proposals this autumn."
