Hugh Robertson Tables Commons Motion Over Government Stealth Tax on London 2012
Hugh Robertson, the MP for Faversham and Mid Kent and Shadow Sports Minister, has today tabled a Commons Motion condemning the Treasury decision to pocket £340 million from the lottery game introduced to finance London 2012. The Conservative Party have made a commitment to forego the 12p tax raised on every lottery ticket sale and use it instead to finance the games.
The announcement has attracted the support of a wide range of organisations including the Mayor of London – Ken Livingstone.
Hugh said: “It is an absolute scandal that anyone purchasing a lottery ticket designed specifically to finance the London Olympic Games in 2012 should see 12p of it lost to the Treasury. Gordon Brown has introduced yet another stealth tax that will cost London 2012 an estimated £340 million. It is simply unacceptable.”
