MP WELCOMES IMPACT OF NEW LOCAL PLAN FOR FAVERSHAM
Hugh Robertson has welcomed the Swale Borough Local Plan as it affects Faversham. The MP made his comments as part of his response to the First Review of the Swale Borough Local Plan which closes on 5 May.
Hugh said: “I firmly believe that Faversham’s future economic well being relies on it maintaining its small market town status and resisting the pressure for large scale house building. In this way, I hope tat it will become a destination of choice for many of those living in the Thames Gateway and its surrounds.
“I particularly support:-
1. The overall strategic policy for Faversham which resists the pressure for large scale house building and concentrates instead on conserving the historic core of the town.
2. The plan for the creek including the presumption in favour of traditional waterside activities at Standard Quay.
3. The linking of the development on the Western Link Road to provision of employment. This is vital both for the local economy and to prevent Faversham becoming a dormitory town.
4. The rejection of Abbey Farm as a possible development site.
I am quite sure that many of Faversham’s pressure groups and societies will want, quite properly, to comment on the detail of these proposals. However, I am delighted with the overall approach adopted by the Council which compliments the promotional work being done by the town council.
“It is the best way to ensure a successful economic future for Faversham.”
