The Conservative Party has today tabled a Parliamentary motion supporting The Premier League's statement to The European Commission endorsed by all its clubs.
‘Football should continue to govern itself, as independent of politics as possible, and the game should be run by those who know it best - namely the leagues, clubs and governing bodies. It is important that decisions are taken at a national level' it states.
Hugh Robertson, Shadow Sports Minister, said:
“The European Sports Review is based on the assumption that football is in crisis. This is clearly not the case here in the UK at a time when our teams make up three of the four semi finalists in the European Cup.
“If The Sports Minister thinks that football in the UK needs further regulation, which I personally doubt, the case should be made here in Westminster and not behind the scenes in Brussels.”
