Cautious welcome

CONSERVATIVES SUPPORT OLYMPICS BILL BUT KEEN TO SEE BENEFITS FOR KENT

Welcoming the inclusion of an Olympics Bill in the Queen’s speech, Shadow Sports Minister, and Kent MP, Hugh Robertson said:

“The Conservative Party strongly support London 2012 and pay tribute to the work done by Sebastian Coe and his team to bring the Games to London. We welcome the announcement of an Olympics Bill in The Queen's Speech today as a clear sign that planning for Britain to host the Games is well advanced.

“We will want to scrutinise the detail of the Bill once it is published but, as the principal opposition party and very possibly the government at the time of the Games, we agree with its principles and will work to ensure that London 2012 has the best possible legislative framework.

“I particularly want to ensure that the Games, rather than the Chancellor benefits from the £340 million raised in tax from the new Olympic Lottery Game.

“I am also keen to ensure that Kent benefits by hosting training camps in the run up to the games.”
